Pro Bono Employment Law Hackathon
Help us HACK our advice pages!
Working Families’ online employment law advice pages are a vital resource for working parents and carers who can’t access legal advice, and provide practical accessible legal information on a wide range of topics.
Our small specialist legal team focus on managing the huge demand for our services so we are looking for:
UK employment lawyers with 2+ years PQE to give an hour or more of their time on the morning of Thursday 29 February 2024, at Linklaters, to review and refine our online pages.
Through the Hackathon, Working Families can use the expertise of employment lawyers to check pages are legally up-to-date and correct, and to enhance and enrich them for the charity’s service users. Further details as follows:
- Working Families will review and sign off any changes to pages.
- Subject to numbers, pages can be allocated to volunteer teams prior to the hackathon.
- More details to follow on timings and logistics.
- Working Families are keen to convene volunteers in person, but if you have interest from employment lawyers based outside of London, please still flag your interest and this can be factored this into hackathon planning.
- Breakfast and refreshments will be provided.
Can’t attend in person?
Please complete the sign up form and we will be in touch to let you know how you can still help.
Who we are
Working Families is the charity for working parents and carers and our mission is to remove the barriers that people with caring responsibilities face in the workplace. Our work is needed more than ever; we hear from distressed parents and carers who are struggling to get by and need to continue to work and provide for their families during a cost-of-living crisis. Access to flexible and secure work is key.
Our legal advice service is award-winning, providing free employment law advice to parents and carers, the majority of whom are women and on low income.
Read our impact report for the last financial year which includes case studies and testimonials and our Legal Advice Service deep dive provides more information. The service includes:
- 200+ free online advice pages, viewed by around 1 million people over 1.3 million times each year. During covid we saw 1.6 million unique users and 2.4 million views.
- Free phone line and email contact form, providing bespoke employment law and in work benefits advice. Last year we advised around 1,700 parents and carers and reached approx. 70,000 views of our Instagram live legal clinics (collaborating with Pregnant then Screwed).
Strategy
We are always looking at ways to improve our Legal Advice Service and our team’s objective in our 2021-2024 strategy is to empower parents and carers to understand and use their workplace rights.
With your help we aim to:
- Increase our existing online reach to 1 in 10 UK working parents.
- Improve the accessibility of our legal advice content to ensure working parents have the practical resources they need and are empowered to deal with the issues they face at work. We will do this by increasing the number of working parents and carers whose query is addressed in full by the online information we provide.
- Increase the volume of bespoke advice we provide to parents who are likely to have least access to justice and be least able to understand and assert their workplace rights, either because of the difficulties of their personal circumstances or because of the complexities of their workplace challenges.
