Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
The opportunities and challenges of family-friendly and “life-friendly” employment practices
This paper reports on the findings from a collaboration between the Work and Equalities Institute, University of Manchester and Working Families which focuses on UK-based small to medium enterprises and family-friendly work practices.
Drawing on survey and interview data collected in 2021 and a roundtable held in 2022, we have developed
knowledge and understanding of the challenges faced by SMEs in supporting employees, in particular with respect to families and other caring responsibilities. We have also addressed the ways that SMEs have adapted in the context of Covid-19, what established practices proved effective, what practices have emerged and the associated implications.
Working Families and Emma Banister are conducting further research in the area of SMEs and family friendly practices. If you are interested in being involved in this work (either as an employer or employee) please contact Emma for further information.
