Write to your Election candidates
Are you concerned about how working parents and carers will be supported by the next Government?
We’ve put together a template letter for you to send via email to your local candidates in the upcoming General Election which outlines five areas that we think the next Government need to take action on. If you agree with our policy asks, then copy and paste the template letter below, or download a Word version that you can amend.
You can find your local candidates and their contact details on the electoral commission website.

Dear [Candidate’s Name],
As someone with caring responsibilities, one of my main concerns is how working parents and carers will be supported by the next Government. I want to give my vote to a candidate whose party is striving to improve the lives of families long-term. I am writing to urge you, and your party, to commit to working towards a society which realises the principles set out by the UK’s national charity for working parents and carers, Working Families, so that:
- All parents can afford to choose how they divide the care for their baby because they have adequate maternity, paternity and adoption pay, and enhanced leave for new parents.
- All parents have access to affordable and quality early years childcare, which suits their working requirements and ensures there is no gap between the end of paid parental leave and the start of funded childcare.
- All job roles are designed with flexibility in mind, so parents and carers are able to thrive in work while balancing their caring responsibilities.
- The social welfare system supports parents and carers in times of need.
- Working parents and carers are confident there is a legal framework and justice system that understands their needs and upholds their rights and entitlements.
As a member of your prospective constituency, I would like to see you advocate for these goals, so that working parents and carers are supported and families can thrive. If you’d like to show your support on social media, these pledges can be downloaded from the Working Families website, and they will be happy to amplify to their followers if you post the pledges and tag their social media handles.
Yours sincerely,
[Your name]
