Lloyds Banking Group – Winner 2017 Scottish Top Employers (large private sector)
Family friendly working is in Lloyds Banking Group’s (LBG) DNA. Flexibility and agility is driven through the organisation from the top and forms a core part of the group’s strategy. It was also one of the first UK companies to introduce a reason-neutral flexible working policy.
LBG demonstrates a breadth and depth to family friendly working. Nationally, more than 35 per cent of employees benefit from agile working practices and all family policies offer enhanced benefits, including Shared Parental Leave (SPL). A pilot ‘Returnships’ programme targets professional women and men who have been on a career break of two or more years. Leading from the top, LBG has an increasing number of senior leaders with flexible working arrangements, including group operations HR directors working as job-share partners. The recently enhanced employee engagement survey measures employees’ perceptions of work-life balance and tracks agility data. This is fed directly to the group executive committee. Lloyds continues to innovate and looks to the future, with a particular focus on its offer to fathers and carers.
- 11 per cent of employees (8,400) participate in the ‘Family Matters’ network. The network offers support via monthly calls, networking, coaching and masterclasses.
- LBG advertises all roles as flexible unless there is a specific reason why this is not feasible.
- Line managers and employees are offered training on flexible and agile working practices.
- 1-2-1 parental leave coaching is offered to line managers.
- Of 101 SPL applications to date, 84 were by men.
The Judges’ spotlight
“The entry showed great balance across the whole family and was one of the few organisations which mentioned fathers specifically. The focus on line managers was excellent and Lloyds clearly understands that engaging line managers is key to success. There is innovation going on too, such as the Returnships programme. There is peer support and their ‘reason-neutral’ flexible working requests shows a focus on equality. They seem to have family friendly working in their DNA and are not resting on their laurels.”
‘The organisation was absolutely amazing with the flexibility I was given. I feel so lucky to be working for them.’
