FanDuel – Highly Commended 2017 Top Scottish Employers for Working Families

FanDuel’s ethos is based on productivity and a good work-life balance. If employees can do a job from a different location or within different hours, every situation is treated individually to assess if the company can support it. To encourage innovation and avoid burn out, all employees are encouraged to manage their workload flexibly in a way that suits them best. FanDuel uses the ‘Happy to Talk Flexible Working’ strapline, and all job descriptions are gender neutral. Internal and external marketing materials have a family friendly focus to attract diverse talent.

FanDuel doesn’t use restrictive policies; however, guidelines are available which ensure consistency. Managers are trusted to lead with intuition. The sense of community embedded in the organisation – including a weekly employee breakfast and a range of social and charitable activities – helps to keep retention rates high.

A flexible annual leave entitlement means employees are not constrained by a fixed leave balance. Childcare vouchers and comprehensive private medical insurance are available. Mothers are supported with enhanced maternity pay and partners have the opportunity to take two weeks paid leave following the birth (plus additional annual leave if they wish).

Illuminating Ideas

  • 100 per cent of employees utilise flexible working patterns.
  • Flexible annual leave entitlement enables employees to attend appointments and family events.
  • Virtual meeting guidelines and software offer support for remote workers.
  • A ‘location independent’ working group encourages employees to explore remote working.
  • All jobs are advertised as flexible unless there is a business reason not to.

The Judges’ Spotlight

“We were incredibly impressed by the culture FanDuel has created, as well as the sense of community and trust. They are so innovative, including initiatives like flexible annual leave. Their virtual meetings and software packages help people work at home with ease. They may not have a suite of formal policies but demonstrate real cultural innovation. They are an inclusive company and ensure that flexibility is available to everyone. Their forward-thinking approach to supporting the mental health of their employees is to be commended.”

The ability to work in an environment where we are treated with trust has had a great benefit for my work-life balance. I have three young children and the flexibility has removed stress and allowed me to take my daughters to nursery and school.
