Neonatal leave

Last updated: 7 Apr 2020

In its budget announcement on 11 March 2020, the UK government announced that it will create an entitlement to Neonatal Leave and Pay for employees whose babies spend an extended period of time in neonatal care. Parents will be entitled to up to 12 weeks’ paid leave, so that they do not have to choose between returning to work and taking care of their newborn baby. According to the Treasury Minister, the government will pay those eligible £160 a week. It is unclear whether this is open to both parents at the same time.

Neonatal leave is due to be introduced in 2023. This page will be updated as more information becomes available.
