Roundtable Briefing: Fatherhood Forfeits and Motherhood Penalties – Shifting Paradigms for Working Parents
23rd November 2017 | 10.30 to 12.00 (registration from 10.00) | kindly hosted by Dentsu Aegis Network, 10 Triton Street, Regent’s Place, London NW1 3BF

FULLY BOOKED
Attend this members only roundtable where we will be discussing new research findings from a study led by Jasmine Kelland, lecturer in HR management at the University of Plymouth.
The research explores the barriers faced by working parents who challenge more traditional parental gender role stereotypes, in particular mothers who work full-time and fathers who work part-time. Findings point to the existence of a ‘Fatherhood Forfeit’ for fathers who want to work part-time and has found support for the existing phenomenon of the ‘Motherhood Penalty’. It is proposed that these penalties and forfeits may explain why so many more mothers work part-time than fathers and that a position of equality for parents can only be achieved if modern workplaces address these issues.
The research uncovers the hidden attitudes that can still be found, and shows that there are deep-rooted biases against men (and women) who want to work in ways that are not considered usual. Fathers seeking part-time work and mothers wanting to work full-time both encountered hostile attitudes and negative judgements from hiring managers in the research.
Places at this members only roundtable are limited to one place per organisation and on a first come first served basis. This event is open to HR & Diversity practitioners.
