Choosing childcare can seem a bit bewildering at first. A good start is to gather information about everything which is available to you - both formal - nannies, nurseries, childminders - and informal - friends, partners, family etc. Then start to sift through the information and consider what would suit you and your child, and what you can afford. Remember to check if you would get any help from tax credits, childcare vouchers or nursery education grant. If you have a disabled child, you may also get help in the form of direct payments (ring the helpline for further advice on this). Click here for our factsheets on childcare and childcare for disabled children. To get a list of all registered childcare in your area ring Childcare Link on 08000 960296 or go to www.childcarelink.gov.uk to look for your local Childcare Information Service phone number.
